6 M of Management
➡️The construction industry is known as the 2nd largest industry in our country after Agriculture. During the last decade, this industry is growing very fast & contributing majorly to the national economy.
➡️Construction projects now are more complex and time-bound. They are equally facing economic, social, technological, political risks at various stages of construction.
➡️The developer's goal is to complete the project within the schedule, at a given cost & maintaining quality from start to end. He has to satisfy customers up to the end-stage.
➡️Risks increase proportionately to the volume of work. Civil engineers have to work in a competitive field.
➡️They must know six important M in our construction. Which is mainly Manpower, Material, Machinery, Money, Maintenance & Management. All these six parameters are correlated to each other.
🟡Manpower: - Indian population is 2nd largest in the world after China & almost reached 135 crores. Even then our construction industry is facing major problems to get skilled manpower. We should train unskilled workers to become skilled ones. They require necessary training for the same. We must ensure their proper wages and insurance related to their daily work. We must check that they are working in a safe environment. They should be trained for the good construction practices available in our construction industry. Engineers also need to be trained for getting the best outputs from available manpower. They should give respect to every worker and treat them as a resource person not as labor.
🟡Material: - Construction industry involves various materials. Time has come to use more and more eco-friendly construction materials and make our construction a Green building and sustainable construction. Our main construction industry is associated with other 250 ancillary manufacturing industries like cement, steel, bricks, blocks, doors, glass, tiles, plumbing, electrical, etc, and many more. Millions of people are working in this material industry and ultimately helping the main construction sector. We must construct more & more Green buildings in future. Every small change in the cost of material directly related to the cost of a construction project. We should also control the wastage of material and apply reduce, reuse & recycle principles while using the material.
🟡Machinery: - Globalization made different countries in the world to come closure to each other. New machinery and new technologies were invented from time to time. To sustain us in this competitive world we must adopt all such new technologies and list as a developed country. Shortage of skilled manpower & timely bound projects diverted us to use more machinery at every stage of our construction.
We are using batching plants for concrete & asphalt, Tower & small cranes, Vibrators, Compactors, Bricks/ Block making machines, Water pumps, Diamond drilling machines, Concrete & Asphalt pavers, Jcb, Pocklein, Dumpers, Jackhammers, Rock breakers during excavation, Various rollers, Motor graders, Water tankers, Steel cutting & bending machines, Bulldozers, Laser machines, etc in the construction sector. This indicates the turning of our construction industry towards a mechanism. We have also started using robotic technology in the manufacturing and production of construction materials.
🟡Money: - Everyone knows that MONEY MAKES THE MARE GO. It is equally applying to our construction industry. Construction projects require small to a huge amount of money. Necessary planning cash flow helps us to run & complete projects in the given schedule. Many projects start but get suffer because of insufficient money. Mega construction projects are financed by Government, Private or joint ventures. This new concept of PPP (Public-Private Partnership) is accepted all over the world. We should welcome this new subject & implement various incoming construction projects.
🟡Maintenance: - Maintenance plays a major role in our construction. Construction machinery needs regular periodic maintenance. It has been noticed that due to the negligence of maintenance, valuable machinery is ideal during working time. This increases the downtime cost of the project. Many times, we import machinery from other countries. Such machinery requires necessary training for an operator to get the best output. To complete projects in the stipulated time, schedule all machines working on the project should give their maximum outputs. Negligence in maintenance simply turns into the breakdown of a machine causing more construction cost.
🟡Management: - Civil engineers need management skills along with their basic knowledge of civil engineering. They must be capable to accept the challenges in the construction industry proudly & willingly. They have to develop their own with many parameters to become a successful engineer. Respect, courage, hardworking, consistency, knowledge gaining, teamwork will lead the engineers towards a successful career. They must understand that civil engineering is an art of building civilization & bridging the peoples.
